Choosing a Digital Marketing Agency
What is a Digital Agency / Digital Marketing Agency?
A digital agency can be a wide variety of things. Usually it refers to an agency which specialises in conceiving and communicating a message based on market and consumer insights. This message is then communicated via a publicity campaign, which can be multi-faceted and may use a variety of channels. Media campaigns could include (but in no way are limited to) websites/blogs, email newsletters, television, print and video. Typically media agencies specialize in a particular field or set of media, and specialise in reaching the consumer as effectively as possible using these tools.
Finding the right Digital Agency for the job?
Digital agencies have specialties and niches, so one digital agency may not necessarily have the right solution. Particular agencies which may be excellent in a particular field may be difficult to find (as their goal is to have their client seen and not themselves). A good place to start is by researching a particular marketing campaign you liked using Google. You could also find digital media groups and associations and look through member profiles OR look at industry award sites.
Total vs Niche Digital Agencies
While some digital agencies specialise in a wide variety of media, others are highly specialized in their own particular niche. For example, some agencies may specialize in web, search engine optimization and streaming media while another digital agency may specialize in television and print. Examples of different media platforms digital agencies use may include (but are not limited to) -
-
Web design, development and Flash
-
Animation
-
Search Engine Optimisation and Search Engine Marketing
-
Social Networks
-
Blog affiliation
-
Newsletter and RSS marketing
-
Event planners
-
Print (e.g. magazines) and billboard advertising
-
Video
-
Word of mouth (via PR Agencies and journalists)
-
Journalists / Copywriters
-
Television
When selecting an agency, it is a good idea to take into consideration what media would best represent your product or service. Based on this you could then select an agency (or possibly agencies) which specialise in your chosen media. Sydney has the highest concentration of digital agencies in Australia and is becoming a world leader in quality digital media services. This is a good place to start, although you should not let location be the only determining factor in choosing a digital agency.

@Dynando
Even if an agency is really good at one thing if they have absolutely no experience in the other things the whole feeling of the promotion could get lost. So I agree that’s it’s important for companies who collaborate to communicate and to ‘get’ each other.
There is good advice for choosing an advertising company in general at the Australian Association of National Advertisers -

Good good.
I think big agencies can push their weight alot in most neighbourhoods (but for a price)! A collaboration between companies could be good if they are both good companies and they have produced good results together before.
Also know who will be doing the work before you sign off. It’s important to know if a company is outsourcing and if so to who and where. Absolutely grill them before you get started.
Nice post.

My advice for gig’s planning.
Find a gig you like / liked - get the brochure (poster / whatever) take it home, Google the text on the promotional stuff. Chances are it will be up on the promotor’s clients page.

Depending on the project, I think good question ask is “do you work with other agencies”?
As you say one agency might be great at one thing while another specialises in another. It would be good to sus out what their strengths and if they are strong in one field but not another (and hence if they will work with other companies).
