Which is more important, driving traffic to your website or encouraging as many people as possible to see your content? Believe it or not, they are not one and the same.Too often, we as website owners live and die by web analytics applications. We fret about bounce rates, unique visitors and dwell time.

Microsoft Assists Small Business and Web Developers with Website Spark

Tuesday 13th of October 2009 05:08:47 PM

Technology giant Microsoft has begun releasing some of its enterprise level products related to website development and online business free to small businesses with less then 10 people. The package - called Microsoft WebsiteSpark - offers the following products free of charge:

Expression Studio 3

Expression Web 3

Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard, Enterprise, Datacenter, and Web, VL Build (yes - this is an operating system)!
Windows Web Server 2008 with Service Pack 2
SQL Server 2008 Web (yes - you can instsall this legally on your webserver, which is also included free)

Update for Windows Server 2008

Visual Studio 2008 Professional Edition (neat)!

Web Platform Installer 2.0 (you can actually download this outside Spark and it comes highly recommended)

More software related to these packages

I guess I’m still pretty sold on open source solutions, and it would be hard to seperate me from my LAMP (Linux Apache MySQL PHP) stack. But at the and of the day this is a pretty sensational deal, and I must confess that I’ve already downloaded the software. This along with the simplicity of the Web Platform Installer and the improved SEO features of IIS (Wordpress can now rewrite search engine friendly URLs directly using the IIS URL rewriting engine) are making Microsoft an increasingly appealing option for small businesses online. Throw in an Exchange server to compete with Linux’s Exim and I’m sold.

There is one condition - you must install the software before a particular date or the offer expires. The idea is that you will create a website and publish it online with the provided software in collaboration with a web hosting provider or using your own servers. At the moment you can opt to have your free software installed with various Australian hosting providers.

To apply for the package with your Windows Live ID, follow this link.

Shameless plug: if you have downloaded the software and need some help setting it up or building a website, get in touch with demonz media.
